High sought after complete collection 19th Century Opera Tokens
In 2011, Christie's auctioned Elizabeth Taylor's extensive collection of clothing, jewelry, and more, including a unique necklace of 13 theater tokens, designed by Edith Head and gifted to Taylor. Her necklace fetched over $215,000.00 at auction.
In the 19th Century, wealthy individuals used tokens as tickets to access their private boxes at the opera, theater, or Covent Garden, often inscribed with the box-holder's name and seat number.
Today these tokens are highly sought after by collectors. We are offering an exceptional collection with an illustrious provenance, that of the Sir Arthur John Gielgud (1904 – 2000). He was was an English actor and theatre director whose career spanned eight decades. He was one of the trinity of actors (along with Richardson and Olivier) who dominated the British stage for much of the 20th century.
This collection of tokens were part of the Sotheby’s April 5th, 2001 sale of “The John Gielgud Collection”, lot 533. Expertly framed, an exceptional collection, with four containing their original 19th century ribbons, this is an rare opportunity to own a piece of acting/ theater history as well as an occasion to build a similar necklace to Liz Taylor all in one go. Sotheby’s 2001 catalogue included.
