From the German-speaking regions, c.1810, this serpent is crafted in 8k gold and set with garnet. The head and forward body are finely chased with tight, scale-like lines; the rear body is smooth and pared back, picked out with small gold bead accents—an intentional contrast that creates rhythm and shifts the visual weight.
The body coils into an infinity loop (∞), a variant of the ouroboros. Though the mouth doesn’t grasp the tail, the closed, continuous form still conveys ideas of eternity, renewal, and unbroken bond—motifs that in period jewelry could signify steadfast love or enduring remembrance in mourning contexts.
The brooch is in antique condition consistent with its age, with oxidation and signs of wear throughout. One garnet eye is a later replacement by our workshop, and one missing gold bead on the body has been reproduced and restored by us. The garnet at the top of the head is irregularly cut.
