Austrian Biedermeier turquoise Day to Night earrings, c.1820
Crafted in 14k solid gold and set with turquoise cabochons, this pair of dormeuse-style earrings dates to the Austrian Biedermeier period, circa 1820. The Biedermeier era (1815–1848), born in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars, marked a time of peace and middle-class flourishing across the German-speaking world. As domestic life took center stage, so too did a new appreciation for refined, sentimental artistry—often inspired by nature, personal devotion, and Romantic ideals. Each earring features a hinged gold hook (dormeuse) suspending a quatrefoil motif adorned with turquoise and a single seed pearl at its center. For daytime wear, this top component offers an elegant, floral simplicity. For evening occasions, a detachable cross pendant—also set with turquoise cabochons—can be added to create greater visual presence and symbolic resonance. The turquoise displays a vibrant robin’s egg blue, beautifully complementing the soft curves and symmetrical design. The original ear wires, which had loosened over time, were reinforced by our jeweler to ensure secure, stable wear. We also meticulously removed years of accumulated dust from the fine gaps of the bezels, restoring their definition and clarity. Now available via DM.
